Canadian crypto criminals pose as officials ๐จ๐ฆ
Criminals in Canada are using Bitcoin ATMs to scam unsuspecting victims out of large sums of money. In one recent case, a Renfrew County resident was duped into parting with $50,000. The fraudsters posed as government officials and instructed the victim to convert funds into Bitcoin and use a Bitcoin ATM.
"Bitcoin ATM scams are a growing problem in Canada, and we are urging the public to be vigilant," said Inspector Mark Patterson of the OPP's Fraud Investigation Unit. "Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to target victims, and we are seeing more and more people losing large sums of money."
In another case, a British Columbia resident was conned out of a staggering $7.5 million in a similar scam. The fraudsters slowly gained the victim's trust and persuaded them to trade cryptocurrencies through a counterfeit application. Only later, to the victim's horror, did they realise their inability to reclaim their investment.
